California Native
Overlooking Lunada Bay, the Ailor garden was conceived as a refuge for local and migratory birds, providing a natural habitat that is native, sustainable and beautiful. This garden for the senses features the sound of trickling water from the waterfall and stream, the fragrance of native sage and honeysuckle, the crunch of pebbles from the path to the whimsical pergola and the visual excitement created by the juxtaposition of plants with bold form, color and texture.
California natives as well as drought-tolerant plants and succulents from the Mediterranean and Southern Hemisphere were used to provide a sustainable landscape requiring little maintenance and demanding less water than the thirsty lawns that once existed. Natural stone paving, boulders and river-washed pebbles were used to add a more rustic, natural atmosphere to the sloped site. Sitting and gathering areas provide opportunities for viewing bird activity or the ocean beyond while also serving as sanctuaries for quiet contemplation.
